Family Shower – SURPRISE!!

I thought the weekend in Texas was going to be solely focused on Amy, so I didn’t suspect a thing when our entire family passed on dessert at dinner after Amy’s hooding ceremony.  As we left the Macaroni Grill and everyone headed their separate ways, Amy took us on a tour of the area around TCU.  When we got back to the hotel, Amy walked into the conference room area and I began to wonder what was going on…we walked through the door and there was my family (all those in town for Amy’s graduation) waiting with a beautiful cake, beverages, and lots of presents.  It was such a great surprise and so fun to celebrate Baby Vo with everyone!!  I could tell that my mom and sister really thought of all the details and I was super impressed that all of my cousins, aunts, uncle, and grandma kept it a secret.  Baby Vo is lucky to have such a thoughtful family!!  (She’s also very lucky to have her stroller, bottle drying rack, some very cute clothes, and many other great necessities now.)

Week 36 – Yellow Melon

Last week, Baby Vo was the size of a large cantaloupe.  Do I need to mention once more that we don’t like cantaloupe?  Probably not.  Anyhow, we decided to use an equivalent-sized fruit and chose the yellow melon.  I know this picture looks like we are somewhere in the woods, but it was actually taken in a park just outside of Beverly Hills.  Sometimes it’s crazy to think about the diversity of our landscape right here in Los Angeles County.

Week 35

I was shocked by the number of you that check the blog.  To all of you, sorry that I’ve been such an awful blogger lately!!  It’s time to catch you up on all of life’s events, but first let me post the weekly pics.

Week 35 was two weeks ago and as I mentioned in week 34’s post, Baby Vo was the size of a large cantaloupe.  Alas, after looking at the book once again, we realized that Baby Vo would remain a large cantaloupe for three weeks, so we took one more week off from the produce aisle.  This is me in Week 35 at my shower (which I will post about soon).

As you can see, I was beginning to look HUGE.

Week 34

This week and next week, Baby Vo is the size of a large cantaloupe.  We’re not cantaloupe-lovers, so rather than buy one each week, we decided to take a non-fruit picture this week and find a large cantaloupe for next week’s photo.  (Last time, we barely finished the cantaloupe before it went bad.  I doubt we could finish two melons without one rotting first.)  So, this is just me in week 34.

When we first started this blog, I thought I’d have no problem keeping you up-to-date on our activities each week.  Then I hit my 3rd trimester and experienced the exhaustion that I’ve heard so much about.  I’m not even going to promise to post more this week…but I’ll do my best to catch you up when I can!

Baby Vo is very active these days.  Sometimes, I think she might just pop right out of the front of my belly at the rate that she pushes out.  Seriously, this little girl is STRONG.

Amy Graduated!!

The weekend after Steve’s parents were in town, we went to Texas for Amy’s graduation.  On Friday, we watched my Dad hood Amy and then Amy received her diploma on Saturday.  It’s funny to see my sister all done with medical school…it seemed like she was just starting yesterday.  My “yesterday” turns out to have been four years ago.  Anyhow, I know this sounds corny, but I’m really proud of her.

(Where is the rest of the family?!  Steve took the photo and we couldn’t find Jeremy anywhere.)

A Visit from Ong Noi and Ba Noi

We arrived home from Italy late one Sunday night, Steve went to San Diego for work that week, and then Steve’s parents arrived on Friday.  It was great having them in town.  We mostly relaxed, but we also ate a few good meals and enjoyed some time out at El Matador Beach in Malibu.  This is the Vo family photo that I took…watch out Steve, I think I might be a naturally gifted photographer!  (joking of course)

Nesting Shower

On April 12th, my friends Candy, Alecia, and Lorraine threw me a wonderful baby shower at a cute, outdoor brunch place in Los Feliz.  Alicia made the decorations and floral arrangements, which were seriously AMAZING.  She is super talented and creative.  (I keep telling her to give up lawyering and open a boutique, but she’s not interested.)  Most of the people at the brunch were my work friends with the exception of Brooke (from my sorority) and a couple of friends of mine through work friends.  I think everyone had a blast hanging out and eating the super tasty food.  I got some great gifts including a baby beach bag, a baby swimsuit, my diaper disposal can, and a really cool decal for Baby Vo’s room (which you will see in a post once we finish Baby Vo’s room).  I can’t thank my friends enough for how thoughtful and lovely the shower was.  Not to mention that Alecia totally inspired the theme for our nursery.

When in Rome…

Ahh…Steve had been waiting his whole life (or at least since he saw “Anchorman”) to walk around saying “When in Rome…”  Did it get old?  For Steve – not one bit.

Anyhow, I know I posted about Italy a few days ago, but now it’s finally time to post about our two-day excursion to Rome.  I must say that we REALLY lucked out with the weather.  It was in the 80s both days that we were there.  We wanted to walk the city, so the fact that the weather was warm and sunny could not have been more perfect.  We arrived by train at about 9:00 a.m., walked to our hotel (with a stop by Michelangelo’s last architectural work, a beautiful church) and checked in.  After dropping off our bags, we headed down the Spanish Steps (literally, within 10 minutes from our hotel), by the Trevi Fountain, in and out of a number of churches, stopped by the Pantheon, enjoyed some delicious gelato while admiring the art in Campo de Fiori, and spent most of the afternoon at The Forum and Palatine Hill.  So cool!!  Of course, I thought I was still young and agile, so I wore sandals…to this day, my ankles are punishing me.

Due to my lack of ankle support and the extra 25 pounds I was lugging around my abdomen, we had to slow down on our second day.  We meandered over to the Vatican in the morning (with a stop for some tasty cannolis), where we waited in a LONG line just to get into the Basilica.  It was super impressive inside, but way overcrowded.  Then, we went to the Vatican museum and were SO grateful to Kristi and Davide for telling us to get reservations.  Totally worth it!  Of course, with the crowds, it took us a while to get through, but we had the headset tour, so we kept ourselves busy.  I was most impressed with the Roman art and statues.  Steve loved the still-life art.  Both of us were slightly disappointed in the Sistine Chapel, but mostly because it was hot, stuffy, way too crowded, and smelled terrible.  I think the actual chapel itself was probably very lovely.

After the Vatican, we went to lunch in Trastevere and wandered over to the Colosseum.  Over all, it was a fantastic day!

We miss Kristi, Davide, and Italy!!!

Week 33 – Pineapple

This week, Baby Vo is the size of a pineapple.  As she grows, I can definitely feel the increased weight in my belly.  My back hurts if I don’t sit or stand in a good position and my ankles are the size of tree trunks.  Overall, though, I can’t complain.  this pregnancy is still way easier than some of the stories I’ve heard from other mothers-to-be.

Italia

Ever since we got married, we’ve been talking about going to Italy to visit my best friend Kristi and her boyfriend, Davide.  Each year, we say “this is the year!” and then the year passes without an inkling of a plan put in place.  In November of this past year, that all changed.  As reality sank in that Baby Vo is not going to be the easiest travel companion we’ve ever had (or the cheapest), we realized that we needed to get to Italy ASAP.  So, in January, we booked our tickets and began to plan.  On April 27th, we finally got on the plane and headed to Florence (where Kristi lives).

We arrived in Florence around 9:30 p.m. on a Saturday.  Kristi and Davide took us to their home, which is absolutely fantastic.  They live in an apartment overlooking a courtyard housing a gourmet chocolate store, a delicious restaurant/pizzeria, stores, and plenty of outdoor seating.  To me, it seemed like the quintessential Italian city-dweller’s home.  We were able to wake up each morning and grab a hot chocolate and scone for breakfast from the chocolate store.  We had pizza from the restaurant.  And I even peeked through the windows of some of the stores (which were mostly for kids).  Just outside of Kristi’s courtyard is a busy shopping street filled with tons of stores – both boutiques and Italian chains – as well a plenty of restaurants, banks, and grocery stores.  At first, we noticed lots of pram-like strollers, which coming from Los Angeles seem impractical when you are constantly loading your child in and out of a car.  In Florence (or at least where Kristi lived), it totally made sense.  There is no need to use a car unless you plan to leave town.  Wouldn’t that be nice not having to drive everywhere…??

Anyhow, I’m guessing you would prefer more pictures that stories, so here we go.  Our first full-day in Italy, we went to Pescaia, a town on the Italian coast.  It was a chilly day, so rather than race to the beach, we stopped in Monteriggioni, an old gated city with an outdoor market and great views of the countryside.  It was hard for me to stay away from all of the cheese being offered, but I figure for Baby Vo, it’s worth it to avoid unpasteurized cheeses.  The beach town was super cute and we had lots of fun walking around as well as up to the top of the hill where the old walled-city still remains intact and lively.  We ended the day at an AMAZING restaurant, where the menu is set and it couldn’t be better…in fact, I’m still thinking about the chestnut-flour gnocchi in zuchini sauce, the garlic & olive oil artichokes, and the wild boar.  It was definitely the best meal we ate in Italy and probably close to the best meal I’ve ever eaten.

On day two, we went to the Chianti countryside where we had lunch at Dario Doc, a famous butchery.  Although Steve had some prosciutto the night before, this is where he really began his carnivorous tour of Italy.  He said the meats were phenomenal.  I obviously stuck with the fully cooked meats, which were also tasty.  It was also on this day that Steve discovered wine to be cheaper than water.  Needless to say, that was a useful fact that carried over into almost every meal for him.  While in the country, we also visited a winery (where Steve, Kristi & Davide enjoyed some wine tasting and I tested olive oils), stopped by Grieve (a cute, little town with an adorable central square), and admired the beauty of the rolling hills and vineyards.  Of all of our time in Italy, this was the most relaxing day we had and we loved it!  We ended the day by going to Florence’s White Night.  On White Night, the stores and restaurants stay open all night and various Italian bands and DJs perform all over town throughout the night.  It was amazing how crowded the city was…everywhere you turned, there were people walking the streets.  People-watching was phenomenal, but it was also fun seeing the city lit up at night.

We spent day three wandering around Florence.  Although it was rainy, we were able to visit the Boboli Gardens and take some great pictures of the Ponte Vecchio.  Florence is a really pretty city!

On days four and five, we went to Rome, which I will save for a later post.  On day six, we went to the Ufizzi in Florence and saw Michelangelo’s David at the Accademia Gallery.  In the evening, we went to an outdoor restaurant with Kristi and Davide, where we enjoyed a buffet dinner and live music.

On day seven, we explored more of Florence with Kristi and prepared for our sad departure.  We ended the evening with drinks on the rooftop of the Westin (which gave us splendid views of the city) followed by dinner at one of Kristi’s favorite restaurants.  I completely understand why…my asparagus ravioli-like dish was phenomenal.  Oh, and of course, we capped the night off with some gelato at Steve’s favorite gelateria.  The doors were locked when we arrived, but I think they saw our desperation and let us in.  Not only that, but they included us in an employee birthday celebration, which had champagne for all.  Definitely an evening to remember and a trip that we couldn’t have been happier to take.  Wish we were still enjoying it!!
